ESOL Classes

CLASSES on THURSDAYS

Whether you have some knowledge of the English language, or none at all you are welcome to participate in West Chester Nazarene’s English program. All you need is a desire to learn English with loving, Christian volunteers. The only cost is $7.00 to cover the student workbook. We are excited about this wonderful opportunity to meet and serve our neighbors, and to share the love of Jesus with you.

What to Expect

  • A placement test so we know which class is most appropriate.

  • Trained teachers, assistants, and tutors.

  • Conversation, listening exercises, and training in reading and writing skills.

  • Classroom size no larger than 12 people.

Please register and we will contact you with information about classes.

Our heart for this ministry is to create opportunities for speakers of other languages to increase their English skills, while building friendships as they spend time with Christian volunteers.  Students will spend one hour each week in a live classroom setting. Some will receive a one-on-one tutor for a second hour between classes. Teachers and tutors have been trained and certified by our curriculum provider. Christian volunteers will pray for and with students as they love and care about their overall faith, health, and well-being.

We are seeking people who have a heart to love and serve people from different parts of the world, and from different cultures. Because we pray with and for our students, volunteers must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; and must be in harmony with the doctrines and ethical standards of the Church of the Nazarene.

It is not necessary to know any language other than English.

Current Volunteer Types:

  • Teacher/Instructor: work with another volunteer to lead a small group online or in-person.

  • One-on-one Tutor : work individually with students online or in-person (approximately one hour per week).

  • Childcare: Help watch the children of our students on Thursdays from 9:45 to 12:15 p.m. Background checks are required.

  • Other: If you believe you may have other gifts to offer this program, please contact Lynn Shimkus.

Training for volunteers include:

  • Observation of one class, live or virtually

  • Orientation provided online or in person

  • Online training provided by the curriculum

Once the online training is completed, the tutor or teacher will receive a certificate of completion.

If you are interested in volunteering please complete the Volunteer Application. If you have additional questions or want more information, please contact Lynn Shimkus.
